What does the bible actually say about praying for government leaders?

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority.
I'll pause there...
I don't want to ignore that we live in a very polarizing time in our country's history.
Frankly, it's easy to read that verse and say, "Yeah, I'll pray for my leaders — I'll pray that God smite them down with some lightning today!"
So, to help us all, I want to give you some context here.
The Context
At the time Paul writes this letter, Timothy had been sent to the church in Ephesus because there were some leaders there spreading false teachings about Jesus.
So, locationally, we know that when Paul says to pray for "kings and all who are in authority," the context is:
- City: Ephesus
- Region: Asia Minor
- Country: The Greater Roman Empire
So, quick question: were the rulers perfect models of Christian politicians? Not by a long shot!
Christians in Ephesus faced constant persecution that got a lot worse as the church grew, and of course, the Roman Empire was far worse.
So my point in all that is simply this: the command to pray for our "kings and ALL who are in authority" is not only for the ones we voted for or that we agree with. It is to pray for ALL.
Praying for Government Leaders
So I want to bring it back and get real practical, and talk about how we are to pray for government leaders.
Finishing verse 2, Paul writes, "that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence."
First: Pray for the Free Practice of Our Faith
Pray that those in authority support the free practice of our Christian faith here and around the world.
Did you know that most of our brothers and sisters around the world are experiencing some form of persecution for their faith?
We have it so easy here, but America is a fairly young nation and undoubtedly moving in the direction of hostility toward uncompromising Christians.
So, to reiterate: we should pray for our freedoms, and we should engage in politics in every peaceful way we can in order to keep the freedom we have.
Second: Pray for Salvation and Holy Spirit Filling
Pray for the salvation and Holy Spirit filling of our leaders.
Paul goes on in verses 3 and 4,
“
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
We have to remember these leaders are people, created in the image of God. And let me tell you — if there is any position that is going to invite more spiritual warfare than even a pastor or evangelist, it is government leadership.
An Old Testament Example
I know many of you are believing for a revival in our country, so I want to finish with some of the last words from a famous king in the Old Testament:
…for his [God] dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, 'What have you done?
You might be thinking that was a psalm of David, but that was actually King Nebuchadnezzar — the once-pagan king who sent three of the Lord's anointed into a furnace to die, who shook his fist at God and refused to repent.
Our God is a redeemer who can redeem a once-wicked king and use him for His glory. So let's pray He does it in our city, beautiful Clarksville, our state and region, and our nation.
